I listened to the audiobook, it gripped me end to end.
I experience Ta-Nehisi Coates’ letter to his son turned as some sort of sermon. His powerful recollection, experience, history, and feelings became words I surrendered to.
Hearing the author made it very special, and emotional. Getting an autobiographical view of the black experience in the US taught me more than any history class dared to touch from the other side of the Atlantic.
A book that will stay with me.
Stalker

messed me up pretty well! mesmerizing fall into the colors of the zone and the reflections of the characters. It’s visually incredible, and you can’t help but keep looking once you’ve adjusted to the cinematography and pace. loved it.
Primetime

Welp, I never dove into how the last sting operation of the show happened. Knew of the story from afar, initially thought the movie exaggerated it but not that much uff.
Other than that the way this movie is shot and produced is so so good. Visually it was incredible. Pattinson was so convincing.
Some good take home questions, why were we really watching this show and why was it so successful… Somebody mentioned how this could be a spiritual follower of Nightcrawler, and yeah, that tracks.
Black Boy (Alternative)

A beautiful experience, this album is a medley of easy, groovy sounds, bliss. The variety of artists layering their voices makes this such an interesting journey. Glad to finally learn about Dahi and put a name on so many tracks I’ve loved along the years.
The Vegetarian

There is no comfort in reading The Vegetarian, and it kept me stuck to the broken dynamics and characters we’re faced with, leaving me wanting more.
The story touches upon a vast breadth of themes, and now only 24 hours after having finished it, I don’t have capacity to dive exhaustively into them.
The main thread that felt growingly central through the three novellas was its focus on bodily autonomy and agency.
Vegetarianism is figuratively (and concretely through the book we are holding) a cover for issues that are never faced directly. Through the unnerving unfolding of the interactions of our characters, we get to face the brutality of a disempowering patriarchal family around our main protagonist veiled behind this single lifestyle change.
Being vegetarian myself, I thought that I could understand Yeong-hye better through her trials as I got situated with the environment. Yet it was clear that the narrative itself made sure that I could not bond or relate to this character.
The three novellas are each narrated by members of her family interacting with her in different ways, immediately reducing her agency to answering violent inquisitions and calls for change.
Almost no one in the story and by extension us, the reader, gets to make a real attempt at understanding Yeong-hye.
She mentions dreams being central to her motivation. We only get a few glimpses of those dreams, and no one shows any interest in making sense of them. No one until In-hye, far too late, cares to reflect with her on the fear they induce, or understand their impact on her psyche.
At every step of the way, her desire of bodily autonomy is brutally denied. The more she is refused what she truly desires, the more she backs out. As readers, we become powerless witness to the disturbing behaviors of all her family members.
One powerful trick the book plays on us is to almost make us forget about her. The second novella completely turns her into a figure of desire, foreign to any immediate discussion, secondary to our worries. Her presence reduced to brief smiles and passive interactions.
A late grace of hope comes within the last novella, where we witness from our only female narrator, In-hye, her sister, a sense of care, compassion, and deep desire to help, sadly coming too little, too late.
Her frustration for not being able to save Yeong-hye is only matched with the desperation I felt reading this last chapter. I was sad.
Sad that she was never given a chance to be understood, that her desire for autonomy was never respected, and that she was continuously violated throughout the story.
Sad that we focused our time and attention on her now ex-husband, brother-in-law, and sister, where all I wanted was to hear her more.
But there she was, disappearing physically and metaphorically from the book I was closing.
Dreams, desires, motivations barely explored, only to be buried behind an unremarkable and reductive name given to a human being, a vegetarian.

Ted Chiang is an Author I’ve heard a lot of and I wanted to dive into his stories slowly. I appreciated a lot of the smaller ones of exhalation, the longer ones (the digient story for instance) felt a bit like a drag. I think this is more telling of what I enjoy reading, might give some of his other works a try.

It was a rainy, rainy night and I had just missed the previous movie showing due to rush hour and surprising traffic in the Taipei Metro.
I yet decided to go for whatever was shown next, I was already looking to get pleasantly surprised anyway, might as well just go for another movie I didn’t even know was even showing.
On the surface, Meets the World and its story is very approachable and quite fun to follow, yet its themes and plot lines stayed with me for a while and marinated into something pleasant to remember and ponder about.
Acceptance stands out as the biggest lesson of this movie, and ripples through my mind when I think about it.
Accepting to be helped and saved.
Accepting to let someone new enter your life and cheer up your views.
Accepting one’s quirks, not hiding them to partners or family.
Accepting to have lost a connection, to a lover or a child.
Accepting that others won’t change to be what we want them to be.
Accepting, and choosing to take a step forward, despite how much it hurts.
I’m happy I got to see this movie by chance.

I am so so so uncomfortable now.
There are so many things amazingly well done with this movie.
One thing blew me away way more than anything else, and it was the sounds. The repetitive, eerie, uneasy sound effects splattered all across this movie and balanced with the sharp silence in key moments. It kept me completely hooked and enhanced the experience so much more reaching near-nausea. To absolutely watch with headphones and a sound mind.

I had two and a half hours left on this already long enough 16 hours flight and wanted something light after a couple other movies. I was very tired but knew i couldn’t sleep anymore.
I filtered the movies by Comedy and ended up seeing this one, I knew the name, and maybe the poster, but had no idea what was inside. Plus it’s tagged as comedy, i needed a laugh.
I didn’t really laugh.
I spent the majority of the movie wondering whether this was some kind of shutter island spiel. I kept on looking for something to come up and relieve the struggle of the protagonists.
It felt hard, but there must have been a reason they were all going through it, right ? Some kind of plot twist that could help a second viewing and make the movie somewhat genius ?
I kept on waiting for something, overanalyzing what was coming and not really appreciating what was presented for what it was.
The plane started its descent, that’s when I realized that everything i saw was everything that was to take. No real second-order reading. No backstory to save them all from this mess.
It was a rough and pure struggle of a community dealing with mental health issues. I had played a trick on myself and made me really reconsider my approach to taking a movie as it is.
There were some really beautiful moments (some hard to watch and others less so), it was honest, and compassionate. In the end, it felt quite good to have experienced it.
I still wouldn’t call it a Comedy though…

the rest felt okay, a few tracks were catchy and good, but most are left behind in a samey cloudy blur on my mind, too bad…
